The race for the U.S. Senate seat in Pennsylvania remains undecided as incumbent Democrat Bob Casey refuses to concede to his Republican opponent, David McCormick. Despite several media outlets, including FOX News and the Associated Press, declaring McCormick the victor, Casey's team insists that there are still "tens of thousands" of votes left to count throughout the state.
McCormick currently leads the race by approximately 40,000 votes. However, Casey's campaign believes that the remaining ballots in counties that could favor the incumbent will help tighten the already razor-thin margin in the coming days. If the race finishes within half a point, an automatic recount will be triggered.
McCormick, a newcomer to politics and a former hedge fund CEO, has already claimed victory and thanked Pennsylvania voters for their support. He is also set to attend the Senate's orientation this week, according to a statement he made on social media.
Casey, a three-term incumbent, has been a figurehead in Pennsylvania politics. His father was once Pennsylvania’s governor, and he is known as Scranton’s pride and the hometown favorite. Despite the current vote count, Casey remains hopeful. "Pennsylvania is where our democratic process was born. We must allow that process to play out and ensure that every vote that is eligible to be counted will be counted. That is what Pennsylvania deserves," Casey said.
Election managers in Harrisburg have not yet provided a timeline for when all of Pennsylvania's votes will be counted.
