Memorial Sunday to Mark One Year Since UPMC Hospital Shooting

York County, PA — The community of West York will gather this Sunday to honor the memory of Officer Andrew Duarte, marking one year since the tragic shooting inside UPMC Memorial Hospital that claimed his life and left five others injured.

The borough has planned a day of remembrance beginning with a musical tribute on Sunday morning, followed by a public memorial service at dusk. Both events are intended to celebrate Duarte’s life, recognize his service, and support the officers and civilians still recovering from the trauma of that night.

A Tragedy That Shook the Region

Officer Duarte, a member of the West York Borough Police Department, was killed on February 25, 2024, while responding to an active shooter inside the hospital. Investigators later determined that Duarte died from friendly fire, a devastating revelation that added another layer of grief for the department and the community.

The shooting left five people injured, including two additional police officers, and sent shockwaves through York County. The incident prompted reviews of emergency response protocols and renewed conversations about hospital security and officer safety.

Honoring a Fallen Officer

Sunday’s memorial will take place at Freedom Park at Democracy Plaza, a location chosen for its symbolism and accessibility. Borough officials say the event is open to the public, encouraging residents to come together in solidarity and remembrance.

The morning musical tribute will feature performances meant to reflect Duarte’s dedication to service and his impact on the community. The evening ceremony will include remarks from local leaders, a moment of silence, and a candlelight gathering.

A Community Still Healing

In the year since the shooting, West York has worked to support its officers and residents as they continue to process the emotional aftermath. Duarte is remembered as a committed public servant, a dependable colleague, and a beloved member of the community.

Sunday’s memorial aims not only to honor his sacrifice but also to acknowledge the resilience of those who survived and the strength of a community that refuses to forget.
