The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) has officially opened its application window for individuals interested in becoming state troopers. Applications are being accepted until May 29, 2026, and can be submitted through the state employment website.
To qualify, applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 40 when entering the academy and possess a valid high school diploma or GED. The selection process includes a written exam, polygraph exam, background investigation, physical readiness test, and medical and psychological screenings.
In 2023, the Shapiro Administration removed the college credit requirement for state troopers, leading to a nearly 60% increase in applicants. The proposed budget for the administration includes $16.2 million to support four additional cadet classes, potentially adding 380 new troopers to the force.
The starting salary for a Pennsylvania State Trooper is $71,647, increasing to approximately $96,225 after five years. Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens, Acting Commissioner of the PSP, encourages those interested in serving and protecting the community to apply.
