Hundreds gathered on Wednesday (July 8) at North Schuylkill High School in Butler Township, Pennsylvania, to honor Trooper Michael Pahira Jr., who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Trooper Pahira, a 20-year veteran of the Pennsylvania State Police, was struck by a tractor-trailer while conducting a safety inspection on Interstate 81 last week.
During the funeral service, Governor Josh Shapiro paid tribute to Trooper Pahira's dedication and heroism, highlighting his commitment to public safety and his devotion to his family, particularly his mother, whom he cared for during her battle with cancer. Governor Shapiro stated, "While his life was cut far too short, his impact on this community and our Commonwealth will be lasting."
Trooper Pahira's uncle, Bill McHale, a retired State Police Major, shared heartfelt memories of his nephew's strength and dedication. "Mike was big in many ways. He was big with his family and friends," McHale said, recalling Pahira's willingness to help others.
Colonel George Bivens recounted Pahira's bravery during a 2016 incident in Pottsville, where he helped rescue 11 people from a burning building. Bivens emphasized, "His legacy is not defined by the way he died, but by the way he lived."
Trooper Pahira's friend, Chris Graff, remembered him as "the big brother I never had," highlighting Pahira's protective nature and dedication to those around him.
In honor of Trooper Pahira, a memorial wrestling scholarship will be established, and legislation is being introduced to name Exit 119 on I-81 as the PSP Trooper Michael E. Pahira, Jr. Memorial Interchange.
The driver involved in the incident, 33-year-old Michael Bon, is facing homicide charges and is being held on $700,000 bail. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
Trooper Ethan Brownback of the Pennsylvania State Police emphasized the importance of the state's Steer Clear Law, reminding drivers to move over when approaching emergency response areas.
The community continues to mourn the loss of Trooper Pahira, whose dedication to service and family will be remembered by many.
